DesignJet Repair Glossop - T230
Local call out today, trip over to Derbyshire for a DesignJet T230 24” repair in Glossop.
Bit of a strange one this. The customer had bought the machine brand new and boxed, commissioned it then became very ill. Two years later, when he was able to use it again, the print quality was very poor. Also, it needed adding to his PC, which for some reason had lost the driver.

To be fair, the machine was in pretty good condition and reasonably clean. Despite this, as part of our Total Care Solution, a “superficial” service and clean was carried out. Also, the Firmware was checked and confirmed as being at the current level from HP.
The main problem with the plotter was no black. The DesignJet was not laying-down any black ink whatsoever whilst printing.
The obvious course of action was to run the “Clean Printhead Routine”. This improved the print quality slightly but nowhere near good enough.
Removed, the printhead and physically cleaned it using a damp cloth. HP state you should not touch or clean print plate because it can damage it – it’s useless anyway, so cleaning it may revive the situation.
After repeating this process several times, the black improved to about 75% of normal. Unfortunately, this was still not good enough and we had to concede defeat. It was recommended that the customer replace the printhead using the HP 713 printhead replacement kit.
This consists of a new printhead plus a full set of inks. These need to be installed when the printhead is replaced. This DesignJet platform requires new ink cartridges to prime the printhead.
Although this repair could be classed as incomplete, we do not carry consumables which the printhead and ink are classed as. These are the responsibility of the customer to supply.
Despite the poor print quality, the DesignJet was working sufficiently to be connected and tested (after a fashion) to the customers PC.
The customer contacted us a few days later to say everything was now working correctly after he had installed the new printhead. – Success.
