DesignJet System Error 86:01
Error 86:01
System Error 86:01
This is probably the most common error for all DesignJets
Paper jam. Switch power off. Clear paper jam.
If problem persists contact Hutchins IT Limited
Although the machine reports this as a paper jam in most cases this will not be the problem.
The DesignJet has encountered a problem with the pen carriage movement - Yes it could be caused by a paper jam.
However it is most likely to be caused by high friction on the rails or the carriage being jammed.
The biggest cause of this will be a Worn Carriage Belt.
To check this simply lift the DesignJet front cover and check the belt Although it is not alway obvious, in most cases a simple glance will confirm this.
Another thing to try is but always ensure the machine is switched off and unplugged from the mains. -
Lift the top cover and gently try to move the pen carriage from left to right or vice vesa. A jammed pen carriage will be difficult to move i.e. high resistance.
Switch Power Off and Check Pen Path
Some of the older DesignJet's - DesignJet 1000 series and the DesignJet 5000 series don't report a System error 86:01 when the carriage belt is worn.
The display will return a message "Switch Power Off and Check Pen Path" - This is equivalent to an 86:01
Again this can be caused a by a number of issues, however, in most cases it will be due to a worn carriage belt. To check this, simply lift the front cover and look at the condition of the belt.
Worn Carriage Belt
At first glance the carriage belt may appear to be in good condition. However on closer insection it should become obvious that it is starting to wear.
Signs to look for:
1. Is there any contamination on the printer chassis? This will appear a small black specs on in the machine (These are bits of belt that have flaked off).
2. Is the carriage stuck in the middle of the machine? In most of the newer machines the pen carriage is should be in its home position on the right hand side.
3. Is the carriage difficult to move manually? (care must be taken when attempting this). Always ensure the plotter is switched off and disconnected from the mains.
4. If it moves, does it feel "lumpy"? - The carriage movement should be smooth.
If any or all of the above are true then - Contact Hutchins IT Limited - to get your DesignJet carriage belt replaced.
