HP DesignJet T520 Repair Bury, Lancashire
On local soil with this one, well almost. Short trip to Bury in Lancashire to repair a HP DesignJet T520 36”. Despite the horrendous weather, this was quite a pleasant drive.
Customer had requested a DesignJet repair in Bury on a T520 36” (A0) plotter. The print quality of the machine had deteriorated with severe banding on the output. Customer had followed the correct procedure and run the “Clean Printhead” routine. Unfortunately, this then resulted in a “Printer Failure” error.
After carrying out our standard “Phone Triage” it was found the DesignJet was dropping blobs of ink over the prints and the chassis of the plotter. – This is a classic sign of faulty printhead.
Normally this problem would be resolved by simply asking the customer to install a new printhead, (HP 711 printhead replacement kit)
However, the problem was accentuated by the printhead leaking ink. The best course of action was to carry out a full service and clean to the machine prior to the printhead being replaced. This would reduce the possibility of the new part being contaminated.
Although this sounds like simple process, for it to be done correctly it takes about 45minutes. The biggest job being the service station and its housing. This must be cleaned of all the spilled ink.
Also, the chassis of the plotter has to be cleaned, along with the carriage rail, which was relubricated to reduce the pen carriage friction whilst printing.
Once the service had been completed it was time to install the printhead kit. This is supplied by Hewlett Packard and is classed as a consumable. As previously stated, it is normally customer replaceable.
The kit comprises and brand new printhead plus a full set of inks. The inks MUST be installed as part of the process. The initialisation of a new printhead requires brand new inks so it can carry out enable a successful prime.
Once this is complete the printhead alignment was carried out (done automatically, as part of the installation process). The machine is now fully functional and ready for the customer to test.
Normally, for a printhead replacement, this would be down to the customer. However, as the machine was dropping ink an engineering visit was advised to ensure the functionality of the plotter.
