DesignJet Repair Kendal - Z5400
Finished the DesignJet Z5400 repair in Gateshead, Newcastle, so now for a “short” drive to Kendal in Cumbria. It’s a nice sunny day so got some tunes on the “Jukebox” and away we go. Seriously, what an incredibly relaxing drive. Pottered down the A1 to Scotch Corner then followed the A66 all the way to the M6.
Z5400, graphics printers, you don’t see one for weeks then two come along at once. This DesignJet Z5400 repair in Kendal, however, was a bit more tricky than the one in Gateshead.
The customer, Scarecrow Design, had had a flood in their premises over the weekend, and when they powered the plotter on the machine reported a DesignJet 02:10 error. Probably one of the most awkward errors a DesignJet can have. That and a 08:10 error, are in my opinion, the worst two.
It can be one of 4 sub-systems failing that causes this issue, although there is one prime candidate.
DesignJet Z5400 Repair
Our philosophy, is to start with the quickest and easiest part to replace and work through methodically trying a suspect part and if no joy reinstall the original. Sounds a bit tedious but it is logical and works.
After working through the procedure, it was finally narrowed down to a failing part, one that happens to be the worst to change. Still no bother, got on with the job in hand, stripped the machine down and gained access to the failing sub-system (Carriage assembly) and replaced the control PCA.
It did come apparent on inspection what had caused the failure, there was definite evidence of water damage on the flexi-cable contacts. How had the water got there? I have no idea. There had been a leak in the building over the weekend, but how the water got onto the carriage assembly is a mystery to me.
Once the part had been replaced and the machine reassembled the moment of truth was upon us. Power was applied to the DesignJet, and the boot sequence initiated (it was switched on). The customer was anxious about the outcome, although an experienced engineer would have known it was going to work. The carriage assembly does a “little shimmy” just after power on, which was not happening previously. - The sadistic side of me let him suffer – sorry.
The plotter completed its boot process and the ink cartridges and printheads were reinstalled. True to form, the DesignJet started to install the ink system – a full 45 minutes.
Finally, everything was good, just a matter of a few calibrations and system test from the customer.
As part of our Total Care Solution (please link) a full service was carried out to the machine. Obviously, this was done whilst the plotter was in bits.
The covers were cleaned of “grubby paw prints” and the machine was signed back over to the customer.
