DesignJet T730 Repair Manchester
Nice local call today, a trip into the centre of Manchester, literally about 7 miles southwest of our home location.
Customer needed a DesignJet T730 repair carrying out. The plotter was displaying “Unable to detect edge of Media” error and leaving excessive ink blotches on the paper after the load attempt.
Not detecting the media is a straightforward fix and is usually caused by the ink spilling onto the media. What causes the ink spillage I have yet to determine. I suspect its something to do with the input valve between the printhead and the ink cartridge.
This becomes blocked and the ink spills out into the printhead casing. This eventually “overflows” and drops onto the media. - This is my theory based on experience; however, no actual documentation is available from Hewlett Packard that I know of.
Multi-Process Repair
To provide a suitable resolution several processes needed to be considered.
Firstly, the machine had to be fully cleaned and serviced. Although this would be done on any DesignJet repair carried out by Hutchins IT Limited, it is imperative it was undertaken to resolve this issue.
Secondly, the service station needed to be fully cleaned particularly the housing and the line sensor cleaning brush.
Thirdly, the line sensor on the pen carriage assembly had to be removed and thoroughly cleaned.
Finally, a replacement printhead is required. This is effectively the failing component and the reason why the DesignJet error is occurring. This is done as part of a printhead replacement kit (HP 729 F9j81A). It contains a new printhead plus a full set of ink cartridges, all of which must be installed.
Once all the above had been undertaken all the relevant calibrations were carried out, the printheads were aligned and the plotter fully tested.
At this stage another problem was encountered. The cutter was making a horrendous noise when trimming the media. Not the end of the world, but this would eventually lead to paper jams. The customer informed me “It’s been like that for a while”. This problem was quickly resolved as the failing component is carried as part of the engineering tool kit.
The DesignJet Repair in Manchester was completed with a minimum of fuss. The machine was repaired within 24 hours of the call being logged and on the first visit. Customer was happy with a working machine doing what it does best – producing hard copy drawings.
