DesignJet T120 Repair, Lancaster
Short journey north up the M6 to carry out a DesignJet T120 repair in Lancaster. Nothing serious, the machine was giving poor print quality and dropping “blobs” of ink onto the page whilst printing.
This is a common problem with this DesignJet platform. The solution is some serious TLC along with a replacement printhead kip – HP 711.
Usually, the printhead kit is customer installable with no need for an engineer visit. The big concern is the ink blobs on the media. If this is happening, it’s a good idea to do a full service and clean on the plotter, especially the service station.

One of the problems with the T120 platform is as the printheads age, they start to get a build up on ink on the underside. What caused this I don’t know. I do know that eventually, after making a mess of the plotter and the prints the printhead will fail. This usually give the DesignJet Error Code “There is a problem with the printers Ink system”.
At this stage you can guarantee a printhead kit and a service will be required.
In fact, when a customer contacts us with this problem, we will not attend site unless a replacement printhead kit (HP 711) is available. This is the best option for the customer. This means we can do a full a full HP DesignJet service, then install the new printhead and leave with the knowledge that the plotter is now fully functional and ready to continue “earning its keep”.
Finally, all relevant diagnostics are calibrations were carried out, prior to the customer performing their own test routine.
With all that competed the machine is fully operational and ready to be signed off back to the customer.
