DesignJet XL3600 Bromsgrove, Worcestershire
On a mission today, journey down to south to carry out a DesignJet XL3600 repair in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire. This is not an area I usually cover; however, the machine can’t come to me so I have to go to the machine.
Customer had reported a DesignJet 0065-0003-0074 error. This is a NVRAM failure on the media motor encoder board.
Although, this is not a serious error to resolve, the machine will not work until the faulty part is replaced. So loaded up the truck, set the tiller and proceeded in a southerly direction.
Now those that know the M6 between Manchester and Birmingham will also know it can be a “bit dodgy” to say the least. With this in mind, the car was suitably provisioned with lots of water. Amazing journey down the M6, no hold-ups whatsoever and arrived on site just over 2.5 hours after setting off.
Now the fun starts.
Hewlett Packard make some incredible machines, the DesignJet range being no exception. Changing the faulty part is fairly-straight forward once you get the covers off. This is indeed a challenge, with around 40 screws holding 6 covers/plates in place.
One thing that distracts me when repairing a DesignJet on a customers site is the telephone. Mobile phones are a wonderful invention, but I always view my time on site as belonging to the customer.
So here I am elbows deep in a DesignJet XL3600 repair and my phone won’t stop ringing. So, taking a break and answering the call one of my DesignJet dealers asked if I could do a DesignJet repair in the Birmingham area – more or less, where I am.
Leaving the dealer to text the details, time to change the faulty part. Again, this was a straight-forward process. Old part out, new part in and setup the encoder strip/encoder sensor relative position using the alignment tool provide.
Quick test before reassembling, DesignJet boots up to ready and does a test print. Happy Days.
Now just a matter of reinstalling the covers and carrying out the relevant calibrations associated with the media motor.

Finally, the machine is fully working again, the customer is happy, as is the engineer. Time to pop 2 miles down the road to the bonus call. It was in Bromsgrove and not Birmingham. How awesome is that? I’ll put a quid on the Lottery tonight.
