DesignJet T830 – Skegness
So, Tuesday this week was a bit of an adventure!!!!
I Raised the Mainsail, strapped the tiller to an easterly direction and rode the wind to the east coast.
Skegness, well just a few miles north of there, to rescue a DesignJet T830 that was in distress.
Main issue was the machine was having problems loading the media. More specific it was reporting the error “Media Edge Not Found – Re-Load Media”.
This had all the hallmarks of a faulty line sensor; however, things are not always what they seem.
The machine was definitely having issues with finding the media edge, and the line sensor was indeed faulty. Well, it was so covered in contaminated ink that it just wouldn’t clean up and had to ultimately be replaced.
The failure of the sensor was due to excessive ink leakage around the service station. Again, due to an issue with the printhead. This is the spiral of events that occur with this particular DesignJet platform.
Resolution
Apart replacing the line sensor several other steps had to be performed to prevent this re-occurring:
Firstly, the printhead had to be removed and cleaned, with particular attention paid to the input needle valve that connects to the black ink cartridge. All excess ink was cleaned, and the valve aperture cleaned with a mild solvent.
Secondly, the service station and surrounding housing were cleaned of any ink contamination.
Thirdly, the sensor cleaning pad was removed and replaced.
These three steps ensured that the problem would not return any time soon. Without these being done the issue would be back within a week.
Once the original problem had been resolved the machine was fully serviced and cleaned. This is standard practice on every DesignJet Repair we carry out.
The line sensor was then recalibrated and the printheads aligned. Once complete the plotter was tested to the customers satisfaction.
This entire repair was carried out in just over an hour from arriving.
