DesignJet T830 Repair, Manchester
Local run today, into Manchester City Centre for a DesignJet T830 repair. Should be a nice easy morning, Manchester is only 8 miles from home base with plenty of on street parking available ….. Mmmm how wrong can you be?
Been on the road now for two and a half hours and still not on site. The customer is situated directly opposite the location where the Conservatives are holding their annual conference. There is a police blockade of the streets and most parking bays in the area are suspended, absolute nightmare.
After almost 3 hours of being stuck in traffic, and trying car park after car park I eventually found a parking spot, more good luck than good judgment. After completing a long walk and running the gauntlet through armed police, I finally arrived at the customers.
Just an aside, am I the only person who feels intimidated when walking past armed police in Britain?
Anyway, back to the DesignJet repair.
Despite numerous attempts the customer was unable to load any media, with the machine was reporting a “Paper cannot be loaded successfully” error. Also, after each attempt, the media had spurious “blobs” of ink when it was ejected.
This is a common fault with this DesignJet platform and is usually caused when the printhead approaches the end of its useful life. I don’t know for sure, but I think the orifice that allows ink flow from the cartridges/tubes into the printhead reservoir becomes restricted, resulting in leakage. Basically, I think it “silts-up”
This “spilled” ink builds up around the printhead housing and eventually drops on the media or onto the chassis of the plotter. It also drips onto the housing of the service station. This in turn contaminates the cleaner for the line sensor, which contaminates the line sensor.
The result – “Unable to detect edge of media – Load cancelled”.
This repair is something I will always do on a standard service to this DesignJet platform, no matter what the original fault is. It literally involves a full service and clean to the machine. Paying particular attention to the service station. Also, to prevent a revisit it’s also a good idea to replace the line sensor.
Once the repair/service was complete it was just a matter of testing and calibrating the plotter as required. This also included aligning the printheads and printing the diagnostic image.
One final thing to do before leaving for my trek across Manchester and the armed police, the customer was experiencing sizing issues when printing from all the PC’s. Again, this was simply a matter of showing them how to change some settings in the driver file.
The DesignJet T830 repair in Manchester is now fully complete, with another satisfied customer.
