DesignJet T790 Installation Hull
Different call today, project is to supply, deliver and install a second user fully refurbished DesignJet T790 24”.
The customer had a DesignJet 500 24” installed. Unfortunately, a “jimmy bar” had fallen on it and smashed the USB connector. That coupled with a few other issues with the plotter the repair bill was starting to escalate. Also, the customer was losing data and missing sections of print when printing PDF’s. This is actually a common problem with the DesignJet 500 series. It can be alleviated, but the customer decided to upgrade the machine.
The DesignJet T790 24” had been fully refurbished and cleaned and was ready to go. All our second user plotters are put though a comprehensive refurbishment process. This involves the machines being fully stripped down and every part cleaned or replaced. Every service station is replaced with a clean reconditioned one. This is done to every machine regardless.
Every machine is subject to our Total Care Solution
This is the process we’ve developed over our 20+ years in the DesignJet repair sector.
Once the DesignJet has been fully reassemble it is then calibrated and comprehensively tested. Every reconditioned DesignJet is supplied with a full set of test inks and a working set of printheads. We do not supply new one as this would increase the cost of the machine. Despite this the plotter is ready to go and should just be a matter of plugging it in and setting up the driver.
That is a exactly what we did. The old machine was removed from site and unfortunately thrown in the skip. The new machine was installed and added to the site network.
Now for the crunch. The DesignJet 500 series of HP Plotters are, in my opinion, a fantastic machine. They are tough, durable, and robust. They are also so easy to work on from an engineering point of view. However, they don’t cope to well when printing PDF’s. They can give a DesignJet 71.06 error – Out of Memory Problem - Data Lost. Subsequently the output drawings can be missing “bits” of.
Also, they can take an “eon” to process the print. The machine will say “HP GL/2 Processing Print” – This can take up to 10 minutes depending on the size of the PDF being printed.
The customer was curious to do a comparison. He’d had the DesignJet 500 long enough to know how long a printout takes to complete. So, with trepidation and expectation at an all-time high, the customer sent a drawing to the DesignJet T790 from his laptop. In the time it took to walk out of his office to where the DesignJet T790 was located the print had already started, literally, less than a minute from “click to print”.
The customer was “over the moon” with the speed of the machine. The funny thing is I’d suggested to the customer he upgraded to a more modern plotter, due to the problems with the DesignJet 500, now he’s asking me why I’d not upgrade his machine earlier.
By following our tried and tested Total Care Solution we had achieved another successful installation of a refurbished HP Plotter. Not only providing the customer with a more current model at a fraction of the cost, but also reducing landfill and creating a working product simply by recycling an unwanted machine.
