DesignJet 510 Repair Barnsley, South Yorkshire
A recent trip out east brought me to Barnsley, South Yorkshire, for a DesignJet 510 repair.
These machines are an old classic, solid, reliable, and a personal favorite of mine among HP Plotters. Despite their age, they continue to function admirably. They do have problems processing large PDF files, however there are workarounds for this.
The biggest problem is with the inks and printheads. HP have decided with their infinite wisdom to stop the production of these items. Meaning they are becoming more and more difficult to get hold of.
This particular DesignJet 510 was reporting an 86.01 error code, indicating an issue with the scan axis (pen carriage movement). This is a common problem caused by a worn belt, but a standard fix, nonetheless.
The belt deteriorates over time and usage. The rubber moldings crack and break off, in places. This in turn exposes the reinforcing strands which get tangled around the motor capstan preventing the pen carriage from moving.
The repair process involves stripping the plotter down and removing the pen carriage. At this stage it’s a good idea to give the chassis of the plotter a good clean. Removing all belt debris and aerosol ink contamination. Now the new belt can be installed, and the machine reassembled. The plotter can then be recalibrated and tested.
The DesignJet subsystems are also cleaned whilst they are in a stripped-down state.
Having done hundreds of these, it's a straightforward procedure.
