DesignJet T500 Repair Crewe, Cheshire
Great call out today. Another trip down memory lane to carry out a DesignJet 500 Repair in Crewe, East Cheshire. Really enjoy working on these old classic plotters.
They were Hewlett Packard’s second platform (after the DesignJet 1000 series to incorporate the HP JetX ink system). They are so well built and easy to work on from an engineering point of view.
The problem with this machine, it was reporting a DesignJet 81.01 error code – “Paper Axis Shutdown”. This can be caused by a paper jam, but its often, the X-Axis encoder failing.
Just a short trip around the M60 and down the M6. This can be tricky due to heavy traffic, however today it was clean and green with a travel time of just over an hour. (Perhaps I’ll buy a lottery ticket later).
After running the on-board diagnostics, the plotter was indeed failing during the forward motion of the paper feed. This just confirmed my initial thoughts about the X-Axis Encoder board.
Plain sailing form now, just a matter of removing a few covers and sub-systems to gain access to the encoder board. Removing the faulty board and replacing it with a shiny new one. Also take advantage of the covers being off the plotter to carry out a full service to the DesignJet.
Quick functionality test before fully reassembling the printer and carrying out the required calibrations. The DesignJet error code is now resolved and once again we have a fully functional plotter. Just some final tests to be carried out by the customer before the machine can be signed over to them.
